Metropolitan champions Clayton captured the VLBA State Pennant Sides Championship at the City of Echuca Bowls Club yesterday.

They defeated a gallant Lakes Entrance side by eleven shots in an excitement-charged final to complete the season without a loss and can justly claim the mantel of Victoria's undisputed champion pennant combination.

Skipper Mary-Anne Spizer and her team of Jan Loyd, Anne Pellas and Sandra Mueller, who dished out a 30-shot thumping to the Lakes Entrance quartet of Joy Towers, Dulcie James, Dawn Severs and Doris Axisa.

The other two Lakes Entrance teams managed to win their encounters, but were unable to match the scoring frenzy spearheaded by Spizer & Co.

Lakes great Pam Moran and her team of Di Roberts, Anne Barling and Shirley Jensen, who were unbeaten at Echuca, emerged from a titanic battle with Clayton's Paula Wood, Evelyn Martin, Rex Prosser and Marilyn White with a three shot win, while the best-performed rink of the event Chris Kool, Margaret Brandhoj, Lena Rosati and Kristy Gillingham clinched a classy 16-shot victory over Clayton's Joyce Lindores, Bill Turner, Lorraine Burke and Jackie Maskell.

Ironically, Kool and Moran were the only two unbeaten skippers over the championship's two days with Kool finishing 63 shots-up and Moran on fifty.

In yesterday morning's semi finals Lakes Entrance was far too accomplished for the Cobram team winning by 31 shots, with Moran up by 25, while Clayton came out of a bruising contest with the talented Golden Square side three shots ahead.

Lindores, who flew to Adelaide this morning to skip a Victorian rink in the Australian Sides Championship at Holdfast Bay, was circumspect about her rink's loss yesterday.I congratulate Chris Kool and her girls on a fine win. The outplayed us in every department and thoroughly deserved their victory.
